SMAS
Our mission at Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter is to end pet homelessness, serve as a community resource for pets and people, and enhance the welfare of all companion animals.
Adopt
When you choose to adopt a pet from a shelter, you are giving a second chance to an animal in need. Adoption is a significant but worthy commitment, and it is our joy to help connect people with their new pet.
Donate
Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter runs entirely on donations, and our mission is not possible without your support. Every dollar and every donation goes directly to the care of the cats and dogs at Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter.
Get involved
Are you interested in helping homeless animals? Do you like to walk dogs, cuddle cats, or bathe puppies? Looking to lend a hand at one of our fundraisers? If you are looking for a truly rewarding volunteer experience that will make you and some very deserving pets feel good, then we have just the opportunity you've been looking for- become a volunteer at Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter.
Animal Control
Residents of Mahaska County may call SMAS directly with complaints regarding domestic animals or livestock. SMAS will dispatch an animal control officer to investigate the complaint. The majority of calls received during business hours will be responded to the same day. Calls received after hours will be responded to the next business day unless it is an emergency.
